Exploring the Village and Countryside
The walk begins in the picturesque village of Adderbury. As you navigate the quiet streets, you will pass a variety of honey-coloured ironstone buildings, including ancient thatched cottages and the grand old manor house. A major highlight of the early route is the magnificent St Mary's Church, a landmark famous for its 14th-century spire and intricate stone carvings.
After leaving the village behind, the path strikes out into the rolling fields of the Sor Brook valley. The rural landscape is dotted with historical points of interest, including a rare weather-boarded windmill and the old buildings of Sor Brook Mill. Throughout the circuit, the elevated positions of the trail offer lovely views across the North Oxfordshire countryside.
Terrain and Accessibility
The terrain is varied, consisting of a mix of roadside pavements, grass tracks, and footpaths through both arable and crop fields. While the walk includes several steady gradients, there are no sections that would be considered steep.
However, walkers should be mindful of the following details
- Gates and Footbridges The route requires you to negotiate several kissing gates and a footbridge crossing the brook.
- The Tall Stile There is one notably tall stile on this path. It requires a significant stretch for humans to climb, but it includes a convenient dog-gate alongside for those walking with pets.
- Livestock While most of the fields are arable, you will pass through one field that is frequently used for grazing sheep.
- Ground Conditions Like many countryside trails in the region, sections of the grass tracks and field paths can become quite muddy following periods of rain. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is highly recommended.
