About Hill Close Gardens

Hill Close Gardens is a rare survival of Victorian detached leisure gardens tucked away in Bread and Meat Close, Warwick, just a stone's throw from Market Square and next to Warwick Racecourse. Managed by a small charitable Trust, these 16 restored Victorian hedged gardens were once used by townsfolk who lived above their businesses and wanted to escape the crowded town centre. Each plot offers its own character, with heritage fruit, heirloom flowers, and seasonal plantings. Grade II listed summer houses feature among the gardens, which are nationally recognised for their historic and horticultural value. The site offers guided tours, talks and guest speakers, open air theatre, and workshops for drawing or floristry throughout the year. Families and children can explore winding paths, discover hidden corners, and learn how plants were grown in Victorian times, with a dedicated Children's Garden and activities for early years and primary ages. A tearoom operates on weekends, with self-service refreshments available on weekdays. Plant sales are a key feature, with the majority propagated on site by a small dedicated team of gardeners, many being rare or heritage varieties not usually found in garden centres. Snowdrops are sold in February, with other plants available from spring through autumn. The well-equipped venue is available for room hire for meetings, workshops, and events. The gardens rely on the support of visitors, volunteers, members, donors, and organisations including the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Warwick District Council.
